Your Guide to the Unique Student Identifier (USI)
In January 2023, the Unique Student Identifier ( USI ) became mandatory for all students pursuing higher education in Australia. Since a lot of you have been asking us about the USI and why you need it, let us give you all the information you need.
What is the Unique Student Identifier?
This is a 10 digit alphanumeric ID that is issued by the Australian Government to identify you as a student. It also helps keep track of all your activities and achievements as a student.
Who needs a Unique Student Identifier?
- All students studying nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses.
- All graduating higher education students.
- International Student studying in Australia for any part of their course
Note: This includes domestic and international students who commenced courses prior to 2021.
Why do you need a Unique Student Identifier?
- You must submit your USI to your training provider or university to receive your qualification, statement of attainment or any award.
- It is necessary for you to apply for VET student loans.
- It is mandatory to receive higher education support such as HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP and Research Training Program (RTP) funding.
- It is useful for credit transfers and to pursue further studies to provide proof or prerequisites.
- Since all your student and qualification records can be accessed easily with one identification number, it also helps you during the job application process.
How do I apply for a Unique Student Identifier?
It only takes five minutes to apply for a USI and you then have it for life. Here are the steps:
- Go to the USI registry system
- Click on ‘Create USI’
- Select the ID that you want to provide
- Fill in the form with your personal information and at least two contact details.
- Confirm identity. This is done by the USI registry using the Document Verification Service
- Secure your account with a password and check questions.

What does the Unique Student Identifier Cost?
Applying for a USI is free of cost.
Is there a minimum age-limit to apply for a Unique Student Identifier?
There is no minimum age to apply for a USI. However, if you choose to use your digital identity, you must be 15 years of age or older.
What if I don’t have the listed documents to apply for the Unique Student Identifier?
You can contact your training provider to help you. You can also contact the USI Register here for assistance.
I had a Unique Student Identifier but seem to have misplaced it, what do I do?
Yes. If you have completed or started any vocational education training in or after 2015, you probably have a USI. Click here to find your USI.
