I am in the middle of the completing TAE40116. Should i quit the course and enrol in the New TAE40122 course?

I highly recommend you to continue the course for the following reasons:

1. The course transition period ends by December 2024. So, if your course TAE40116  is completed prior to 31st December, then you do not have to upgrade to the new course immediately. If your course cannot be completed within that period, then your RTO with whom you are undertaking the course will be responsible to transition you to the new course.

If you are Frontier Learners and currently undertaking this course with us, I would recommend you to complete the course as all our intakes would be completed prior to the December month. Transitioning you in between the course is more like you are restarting the entire course which would be considered as Withdrawal from TAE40116 and enrolling to TAE40122. As the core units of TAE40116 are mostly not Equivalent, you would be required to repeat a fair amount of work, since you would be not qualified for gap assessment as you do not still have experience working as Trainer and Assessor. By completing the TAE40116 while you plan to upgrade you are in the industry attracting potential employers.

2. Since both the courses are equivalent, there would be no requirements for you to upgrade immediately. As you have completed the course at a very recent date or during the next few months, you remain current as per Industry Currency requirements. Yes, over the due course (in next year or 2) you wish to upgrade can certainly give you a competitive advantage for job hunting considering that you have industry relevant experience and qualification current and valid for the current period. Your competitive advantage is not on upgrading TAE40122 immediately but ensuring that your industry currency and qualification is uptodate. An ideal RTO would choose first a Trainer who is industry current and have relevant qualifications to what they would be training and assessing.

If you still consider upgrading, please see below the unit of competency mapping from TAE40116 and TAE40122 details  which will enable you to make a decision.

As per the packaging rules, for electives up to 2 may be from any currently endorsed Certificate III or above training package qualification or accredited course, provided that no more than 1 is selected from a Certificate III.

For electives in total you would receive 2 Credit Transfers for TAEDEL301 and TAEDEL402. If you have achieved other qualifications from any training package relevant to what you are planning to train and assess, you may be eligible for 2 more Credit Transfers. This leaves you to complete 2 additional electives. For Frontier graduates we would recommend the next 2 electives must be TAEASS502 and TAELLN411 as we can conduct gap training and assessment.

Is it compulsory to Upgrade from TAE40116 to TAE40122?

As the news spread that TAE40116 has been superseded by TAE40122, I am sure VET trainers and assessors must be wondering,  “Do I have to upgrade again to the new TAE40122?”

Well, a very straightforward answer could be ‘NO, you don’t have to as TAE40122 is equivalent to the old TAE40116’. That must be a relief!  I am sure back then when TAE40116 was released we all went through the nightmare of upgrading from TAE40110 to TAE40116. We certainly remember the urgency to be qualified with TAE40116 within the transition period. It was rather challenging. In comparison, with the new transition we don’t have to rush.

Then Why Should You Consider Upgrading?

Does the lack of urgency mean that we don’t ever have to upgrade ourselves to the new TAE40122?

To answer this question, let us rewind to 7 years ago.

This was when we had the old TAA40104 which was equivalent to TAE40110. So, many of us chose not to upgrade. I am sure that you, or anyone you know who was in this scenario, can relate to how difficult it was to upgrade from TAA40104 to TAE40116. The issue was that many units of competency were not equivalent.  So it was pretty much like doing the entire TAE40116 course from scratch. Well history may repeat itself if we take the new TAE40122 less seriously.

Continuous Improvement- Staying Current with Industry Demands

One thing is very constant in our VET sector – ‘Continuous Improvement’. As the industry changes, technology changes and learning and assessment styles improves, it is essential that the TAE qualification must go through the improvement process, too.

So, it is certain that, down the line, TAE40122 would also be superseded. Of course, the frequency of changes may differ and may not be as quick as we have seen with the last few TAE packages. From this perspective, I believe that it is worth upgrading to the new TAE40122.

Although the new TAE40122 is equivalent, the units of competencies are mostly not equivalent . There are vast improvements to the packaging rules and the requirements and frequency of performance evidence gathering.

Here are the most prominent differences between the two:

  • The new TAE40122 has 12 units of which 6 core and 6 electives whereas the TAE40116 had 9 core 1 electives.
  • There is a  brand new additional unit of competency in the core list.

The core units from TAE40116 are not at all equivalent. What does this mean for you? Gap training and assessment or repetition of all the units of competency may be in the cards depending on the RTO you have enrolled with.

Above all the hard work that you have put into achieving competency for TAEASS502, TAEASS402, TAEASS403 and TAELLN411 are now not equivalent and have major changes with additional requirements. Also, the TAEDEL401 Plan, Organise and Deliver Group Based Learning unit of competency, which is also NOT Equivalent, has a requirement where you have to conduct face-to-face sessions with physical presence. In simple terms, this task cannot be conducted via online delivery or presentation.

The upgrade to TAE40122 would certainly not be straightforward as the volume of learning and assessment could be lengthier compared to upgrading for TAE40116. There can be more challenges when TAE40122 supersedes again, especially if it’s not equivalent.  This would mean a compulsion to upgrade just like we had 7 years ago. So, it is clear that upgrading to TAE40122 would be a wise decision and can save you a lot of trouble in the future.

Given the necessity for professional development, you certainly tick that box, too.

So, here’s an opportunity for you to add one more very essential achievement to record on your professional development register to demonstrate your currency and validity.

When Would Frontier Be Ready to Deliver the New TAE40122?

As Frontier always strives to give you a unique learning experience.  We are still working on designing a very promising strategy with valuable learning and assessment resources to give you the best learning outcome.

In the new experience, we promise that mirroring Frontier Trainers and Assessor and experiencing a professional scenario while undertaking the course is in the cards. We are planning to launch the new TAE40122 in April. You can expect a formal announcement of the intake dates for TAE40122 by mid-March.

Here is the best part. Trainers with the TAE40116 competency WILL NOT be required to repeat all the units of competency which are not equivalent.  At Frontier, you would only be required to undertake Gap Training and Assessment for the part of the unit of competency that is added to the old unit of competency.

For instance, previously in the TAEASS402 Assess Competency, you had to demonstrate conducting assessment of at least five candidates within the vocational education and training (VET) context against at least one endorsed or accredited unit of competency according to the organisation’s assessment processes and practices.

On the other hand, in TAEASS412 you have to conduct a total of at least 6 assessments, at least 1 of which must use recognition of prior learning (RPL) for 3 different candidates, against all requirements specified in at least 2 different units of competency from a nationally recognised training package or accredited course. The same 2 units could  be used for each candidate.

Frontier will not ask you to conduct 6 assessments but only the gap that is required if you have previously achieved competency in TAEASS402 as part of the TAE40116, which I am sure most of you have.

Stay tuned for updates about the intake. We promise that it will be worth the wait. That said, enquiries from previous TAE graduates are pouring in.
